went to Cannes in may 97 and the industry turn was more obvious than ever - I wrote a small piece (never published so here's a rough draft) suggesting usage fees as a better model for software authoring - not too dissimilar to the renting fees some manufacturers are discussing now
spent a few hours being a train bound commuter on Southwest rail in England. Didn't like it much.
